A Red Alert for those who say that story is the backbone of a movie, beware
Dabangg is standing without a backbone. Made on a waferthin story line like every other bollywood movie, Dabangg promises nothing but full- on entertainment. Despite the lack of a strong backbone, Dabangg stands tall due to 3 main reasons. The first, to start off is top-notch trailers and aggressive promotion ensuring Housefull boards, second is Salman Khan's bravura performance and star power and last but not the least an already super-hit soundtrack. Oh did I forget to mention the rib-tickling dialogues and mind-blowing action sequences? Dabangg is a strong movie even without a novel storyline. Its not every day you get people screaming, shouting and whistling on each punch or each song, its very rare and that's where the movie wins.
As for the story,
Dabangg is a movie about a fearless but corrupt police officer Chulbul Pandey [Salman Khan] and his relationship with his step brother Makhan [Arbaaz] and father [Vinod Khanna]. Chulbul hates his step brother and father, a young politician Chedi Singh [Sonu Sood] also an arch rival of Chulbul uses this enmity between brothers to fulfill his evil plans. As you can make out, the story has nothing new to offer, but the treatment offers plenty of entertainment.
If a good story can fail due to bad presentation, an average story can work if presented well, Dabangg falls in the second category for obvious reasons. The excellent Munni Badnaam by Lalit Pandit and some melodious tracks by Sajid-Wajid, ace action sequences and witty plus double meaning dialogues supported by some very good performances make Dabangg an engaging fare.
The movie started making news right from the first teaser and to a great extent Dabangg does live up to the expectations, but if it also had a novel storyline the content would have been much more powerful.
Coming to the director Abhinav Kashyap, he has really struck gold at debut. The presentation is excellent and the direction is pretty good for a debutant but he has plenty of room for improvement especially if given a better story to tell. The movie does not bore at any point thanks to crisp editing and runtime of two hours and seven minutes approx. The climax battle between Chulbul and Chedhi is one of the best in recent times and also the high point of the movie.
Salman Khan is the life of the movie, he does full justice to a tailor-made role and no other actor would have made Chulbul Pandey, as Dabanng as he has made this character to be. Salman shows how a superstar can not only carry a big movie like Dabangg on his strong shoulders despite an average storyline, but also attract audience and provide a fultoo paisa-vasool experience. The second debutant Sonakshi Sinha, gets minimal scope but she has the personality and presence to carry off more challenging roles.
The hero only looks better if he gets a villian who is at par and that is what Sonu Sood delivers. He is simply outstanding as Chedhi Singh and is a perfect enemy to Chulbul Pandey. Standing tall, rubbing shoulders he matches up with an actor like Salman Khan and despite being a baddie in the movie, he is undoubtedly the second best performer. Infact, its after a long time that we got to see a head to head finale of good vs bad in the climax greeted with ceetis and taalis. Arbaaz Khan the third debutant, as a producer of course, does an average job as an actor, he plays the step brother Makhan. Vinod Khanna is also just ok, while Dimple Kapadia is pretty good although goes a bit over the top sometimes. Mahie Gill gets minimal scope, so does Anupam Kher. Om Puri is just wasted. The support cast including the police constables and the evil henchmen are pretty good.
To sum it up Dabangg has Dabanng performances, Dabangg music and Dabanng entertainment. The movie would have fetched 3 stars or less if it was made with any other actor, but luckily it has Salman Khan's bravura performance who has made Chulbul Pandey's character immortal.
As for the box-office, Dabangg is definitely on road to be the biggest blockbuster of the year.
Highly Recommended, Mad Entertainer.
